If you’re new here, a fun fact is that the T in TAMSO stands for Typography. Okay that’s made up, but Typography Matters.
It’s more than just picking a nice font. It’s an art that involves selecting fonts, setting font sizes, line spacing, and organising text elements to create a harmonious balance between copy and design.
So, why does typography matter so much in design? When you land on a website or explore a digital product, the ease with which you read and absorb information matters. Great typography ensures that every word is clear and inviting. It also sets the tone of your brand.Typography can exude elegance, shout exciting, and even convey trustworthiness. In our digital world, where first impressions are crucial, typography plays a vital role in helping users navigate your digital interface with confidence.
Within the context of our projects, we take the selection of typography for our clients seriously. In this article, we share some of our internal principles for typography design.
Keep it simple! Too many typefaces can look sloppy and lead to confusion. It’s best to stick to between two and three typefaces in design. Using multiple typefaces also adds to the size and loading time of applications.
Your typefaces shouldn’t be too similar; otherwise, their nuances will be lost. Create contrast by choosing one serif and one sans serif font.
Your typography must be clear to effectively communicate information. Consider your user, their environment, and the medium. Colour and contrast are crucial for accessibility; for example, pale yellow text on an orange background is harder to read than on a navy-blue background.
The rise of "dark mode" highlights the importance of accessibility, reducing eye strain and improving legibility (recognisable text) and readability (easy-to-follow text).
Hierarchy for your app/site is crucial as it allows your users to quickly scan through information. Organise your content according to priority; the most important must be the most prominent and the least important should be smaller and unobtrusive. Size, weight and colour are effective ways of creating visual hierarchy.
In your design work, you will need to create websites or apps that function seamlessly on both desktop and mobile devices. Therefore, it’s crucial to design typography that enhances the user experience on both platforms. Ensure your typography scales well across different screen sizes. Establish a font and typeface scale at the beginning of the design process, considering various operating systems and platforms.
Typography is a key component of your visual language. Like colour, form, and pattern, typography sets the mood, tone, and perception of your product.
