Our team at TAMSO come from all sorts of backgrounds, when exploring all the different frameworks for collective structured problem solving, we have found that is the Double Diamond approach consistently worked best for us time and time again.
In our mission to become as transparent as possible, we wanted to share our process.
The Double Diamond Framework consists of four distinct phases: Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver. Each phase has its own set of activities and objectives, all working together to work towards discovering effective solutions.
Within the Discover Phase, our team performs extensive research and exploration into the nature of the problem. Participants aim to gain a deep understanding of the problem at hand, conducting user interviews, market analysis, and trend research. During this Discover phase, we immerse ourselves within the world of the problem. Seeking to uncover the root causes that contribute to the problem’s existence.
This phase, involves divergence, expanding our understanding to consider all relevant problems, causes, and flow-on effects.
Within the Define Phase, our problem is framed and defined based on the insights gathered in the Discover phase. Participants synthesise findings, identify patterns and develop a clear problem statement. During the Define Phase, participants analyse the data collected to identify common themes and patterns.
This information is used to create a problem statement that captures the core problem and its key challenges. Our problem statement will serve as a true north throughout the rest of the design process, ensuring that the solutions developed will be aligned with the identified problem.
This phase, involves convergence, as we combine the different elements of the problem into a single problem statement that identifies the gap between current problems and our goals.
Within the Develop Phase, participants explore different possibilities and generate a wide range of ideas. During this phase, participants unleash their creativity and generate various ideas, using brainstorming techniques to encourage out-of-the-box thinking and foster innovation. Our team lean on tools such as Prototyping to create tangible representations of potential ideas and User Testing to gather feedback from the target audience, ensuring that solutions meet their needs and expectations.
Notably, this is the first-half of the second diamond in our double diamond process, which again involves divergence. Given that the problem statement has been defined, we expand our scope and consider a multitude of potential solutions.
Our final phase, Deliver, focuses on shaping our ideas into tangible solutions. Participants carefully plan the implementation, considering practical constraints and user feedback. This phase involves convergence, where we narrow our focus onto the best solutions, whilst we make consideration for practical constraints such as budget, resourcing, and timeframes, ensuring that the solutions can be realistically executed.
Participants may create roadmaps to guide the implementation and monitor the progress of the solutions. This ensures that the solutions are successfully delivered and that the desired outcomes can be achieved.
